halong bay
making the journey to the gulf of tonkinnot an uncommon sight....our trusty guide, hung (born in the year of the dragon)guess who?!heading out into halong bay....it's hard to imagine that this is where the vietnam/american war began....on the gulf of tonkin where in 1964 the uss maddox engaged in gunfire with boats in the bay. of course the u.s. claimed that it was the maddox that was attacked, but this was later found to be untrue....but the accusation of attack gave president lyndon b. johnson the opportunity he wanted to invade vietnam and he gained the misled support of the american people. sounds all too familiar.goofy kids!david and jenwe came upon a floating fish market where we bought a live red snapper to have for lunch.a woman rowed her boat filled with fresh fruit for sale up to the fish market....manuella bought some oranges and bananasmore incredible limestone formations rising up out of the water.so happy to feel the sun on my skin and breathe in the less polluted airfeast on the boat....i think we'd all agree it was quite possibly the best meal we had in vietnam....the seafood was fresher than fresh and the food was prepared immaculately.the red snappergroup photo!!making our way back to shore....i was experimenting with my camera and put it on the "dusk/dawn" setting for this photograph....
Our planet i-s paradise, your pictures are fantastic, Jessa. Thankyou. I feel stirrings within already..to throw a few things together & take off. Kavita
2007-2008: ...and so, for her thirtieth year, she is embarking upon a pilgrimage abroad...teaching english at a university in south korea, making her way to ancient buddhist temples nestled high in the mountains where monks and nuns rise early to chant and pray, relying on the kindness of strangers and a lightness of heart, and meeting challenges and fears along the way that she is ever-so-ready to befriend.
2008-2009: ...and now, for a second year, she is returning to korea....to her high rise sanctuary and an abundance of red pepper paste...to a vibrant, growing community of friends, students and colleagues...to not a day going by without some measure of surprise and unexpected kindness.
herein lies her journey...
